Could you help shape the future of one of Bristol’s exceptional maintained nursery schools?

Filton Avenue Nursery School is seeking a committed and enthusiastic Chair of Governors to help guide our nursery strategically as we continue to grow and serve children and families across Horfield, Lockleaze, Ashley Down and Filton.

For more than 80 years, Filton Avenue Nursery School has been at the heart of the local community, providing high-quality early years education, family support and inclusive learning opportunities for children aged 2–4. We are proud of our nurturing ethos, creative curriculum, strong community relationships and commitment to helping every child thrive.

As Chair of Governors, you would play a vital strategic leadership role by:

  • Supporting and constructively challenging school leadership
  • Helping shape the long-term vision and priorities of the nursery
  • Ensuring strong governance, safeguarding and accountability
  • Championing high-quality early years education
  • Supporting positive outcomes for children, families and the wider community

This is not an operational role and does not involve managing the day-to-day running of the nursery. Instead, the Chair works collaboratively with governors and school leaders to provide strategic oversight, support and encouragement.

We welcome interest from people with leadership, governance or professional experience from any sector, including education, business, finance, HR, health, community work or the voluntary sector. Previous governance experience is helpful but not essential — training and support will be provided.

Why join us?

  • Opportunity to make a genuine difference to children’s lives at the earliest and most important stage of development
  • Be part of a passionate and community-focused nursery school
  • Develop valuable strategic leadership and governance experience
  • Work alongside dedicated staff and governors committed to inclusion, creativity and excellence in early years education

“Positive learning experiences mean that children are enthusiastic and confident young learners… Their happiness and confidence shone!” — Ofsted
