Avon and Somerset Police has issued important information about e-scooter laws that parents and carers should be aware of.

E-scooters and other powered transporters have grown in popularity recently, but the current law is clear about where they can and cannot be used. You cannot ride an e-scooter or any other powered transporter on a UK public road, cycle lane or pavement. Privately owned e-scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission.

Some areas in England, including parts of the Avon and Somerset force area, are undergoing government trials allowing hired e-scooters on public land and roads. However, these trial schemes are only open to UK driving licence holders and have strict terms of use.

If stopped by police whilst riding an e-scooter illegally, the scooter may be seized and destroyed. Riders could also face prosecution for driving without insurance, and penalty points can be issued, which would be recorded when applying for a driving licence.

This is important information for families to understand, particularly if considering purchasing an e-scooter or if older family members are using them. For more information, visit www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/escooters
