Acorns Room at Filton Avenue Nursery School has some very exciting new additions — we have got pet millipedes!
Our new residents are Black Fire Millipedes (Centrobolus fulgidus) and they have been an absolute hit with the children. The children have been watching them closely, counting their legs, learning how to look after them, giving them names and even having a go at holding them. The sense of wonder and care that the children have shown has been just lovely to see.
As well as being brilliant fun, having class pets is a fantastic way to develop early science skills and understanding of the natural world, whilst also nurturing a sense of responsibility and respect for living creatures. And as an added bonus, millipedes are remarkably low maintenance — which suits everyone very well!
