Following on from last week’s fun with air-dry clay and making creatures, this week the children in Acorns continued exploring their creativity through baking! We made bread hedgehogs, shaping dough into spiky little friends and watching them rise and bake, learning about the transformation of ingredients through the baking process.
The children loved adding the finishing touches with raisins for eyes and using scissors to snip the dough to make the “spines,” which helped develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through these precise movements. It was a brilliant sensory experience full of kneading, shaping, and, of course, the delicious smell of freshly baked bread! These hands-on cooking activities support children’s understanding of following instructions, measuring and combining ingredients, and the satisfaction of creating something they can share and eat together.
We’ve attached the recipe if you would like to try this together at home.
