The children from Beech Room and the children from Willow Room have been awarded a certificate from the RSPB for their amazing bird spotting and counting skills!

Filton Avenue Nursery School signed up to partake in this nationwide event back in the autumn term, and the RSPB were thrilled with the data we had collected on which species of birds visited our garden.

They provided us with with all the necessary things needed to record our garden birds, and the children loved being able to write down and tally all the different varieties of birds.

The RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch is an engaging educational initiative organized by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), designed to connect children across schools and nursery schools with nature while contributing to vital conservation efforts.

Running annually from early January to mid-February, this event invites schools across the UK to participate in a citizen science project by observing and recording the bird species in their local environment for just one hour.

Since its inception in 2002, over a million children have participated, making it the world’s largest school wildlife survey!

The data collected helps scientists monitor bird populations and assess trends in biodiversity, as many bird species in the UK are currently facing threats.

This hands-on activity not only enhances children’s observational skills but also helps to promote a sense of responsibility towards wildlife conservation, encouraging them to appreciate and protect their natural surroundings.
